In 1984 Paul Forsberg, a landscape contractor in Minneapolis invented the first commercialized segmental retaining wall (SRW) system, KEYSTONE. In the few years that followed others emerged. By 1990 there were 5 or so notable “SRW’s” available in the market. Keystone, Allan Block, Anchor, Versa-Lok, and Rockwood. For heights beyond three feet these wall systems relied on an engineered textile material called GEOGRID to stabilize and “reinforce” the soil behind the concrete block face. When combined the block and geogrid components along with processed quarried stone and compacted ONSITE SOIL for backfill could be designed and built to almost any height desired.
